Golden Week がヤッテきました。実は、私は昨日の１１年前初めて日本に来ました！その時にその１１年後私は落語家でなんばグランド花月のそとで大阪人を笑わしているとは想像できませんでしたね。

明日からNGKの前で毎日２ステージを勉強させていただきます！今回のパフォーマンスはアコーディオン漫談です。とてもとても楽しみにしております。時間がありましたら是非遊びにいらして下さいませ。

一緒に出ているメンバーは凄いですよ：おしどり、もりやすばんばんびがろー、あと私の兄弟子のたすく兄さん。こんな素晴らしい大先輩方と一緒の出番を頂くとは恐縮でございます。

私の出番の時間：１日：２時、４時　　２日：２時、３時半　　３日：１２時半、３時半　　４日OFF　　５日：１２時半、３時半

事務所の近くの橋で自分の作品を売っている子たちです。一度警察に捕まったらしいですが、直ぐに戻ってきました。頑張って下さい！

私も明後日から外の仕事で頑張ります！！！

Some young people selling postcards they created themselves.  This is on a bridge near our office.  The police chased them away once but they came right back they said.

Starting the day after tomorrow I'm working outside too!

この間レストランでドイツソーセージが出てきました。私の両親はスロベニア出身なので、こういうソーセージはよく家で食べます。ところでこの間レストランで出てきたソーセージが凄く小さかったです。しかも高い！！！三本しか出てないのに６８０円！カナダでは考えられないです。たまたま次の日凄く似ているでもよっぽどでかい「スペシャル・ソーセージ」を７−１１で見つけました。１５０円でとてもとても美味しかったです。しかもカナディアンサイズでした。

The three small sausages were apparently imported from Germany.  Tasty, but expensive.  Three tiny sausages for about $7.  The next day I found something similar at the 7-11、aptly named "Special Sausage".  It tasted pretty good and came in at a much more reasonable 150 yen (about $1.50). 

  事務所の近くのたこ焼き屋の看板です。英語の訳は凄く面白い：pizza ball。確かにそんな感じなものですね！

Japanese "takoyaki" is literally "baked octopus", but actually means a doughball with a small piece of octopus in the centre, topped with sauce and mayonaise and fish flakes etc.  This one shopw translates "takoyaki" as "pizza balls".  Actually not a bad translation at all, especially since "doughballs with a small piece of octopus in the centre, topped with sauce and mayonaise and fish flakes...." would be a bit long for a sign.

修業は忙しい時にランチはパッとファストフードを食べることになります。でも、このロッテリアのダブルチーズバーガーのチーズがなかなかとれないんですので、ファストフードと申し上げても食べきるまではかなり時間かかります。

Sanga is particularly enjoying this Lotteria Double Cheeseburger.  Fast food maybe, but it took him a long time to finish it.

サンシャインクリーニングも見つけて、輝（TERU）という麺屋もあるみたいですね。麺屋もサンシャイン割引でますかな・・・

I found a noodle restaurant with the same Japanese character for "Shine" that appears in my name, Sunshine.  Along with the Sunshine cleaners, I wonder if I can apply for a discount...?

  この間ちょっと出さしていただきました番組は「うんちくクン」という番組でした。今日三河君からいただきました駄菓子が「うんちくん」というキャラのキャンディー。その微妙な違いがまだ私に難しい・・・

I was on a TV show last week called Unchikukun.  The character represented on the candy I'm about to eat is named Unchikun.  I'll let you know about the subtle differences between the two once someone explains it to me...

三河君にいじめられています。このボクシング・グローブはでかいんですけど、もっと恐ろしいことは三河君のトレーナーに書いてある言葉：VICIOUS。日本語に訳すと「凶暴な」「邪悪な」「悪意のある」です。道で三河君に会ったら、気をつけて下さい。

東京の友達の近所の桜です。ところで東京で雪が積もっているらしい。見た〜〜〜〜〜い！雪花見ははやってみたい！

My friend sent me this cherry tree picture from Tokyo.  Apparently it's snowing in Tokyo.  Cherry blossom viewing in the snow - now that must be a rare activity!

今週たまたま二回もテレビで勉強させていただきましたが、やっぱりテレビで太って見えますね。ま、実際に太っていますからかな・・・ちょっとダイエットもう少し頑張りましょう。

I had the opportunity to be on TV twice this week.  TV really makes you look fat (although there is the possibility that that is because I am fat...)  Time to put a little effort into that diet...

また初経験です。三河君に日本の駄菓子の魅力を教えていただきました。これは「モロッコヨグル」です。おいしいですけど、一個ではちょっと足りないんですね。

The Japanese know how to make things compact, and their traditional sweets for kids called "Dagashi" are no exception.  This sweet is called "Morocco Yogur".  I assume it's an imitation yoghurt, but since it's small they omitted the "t" on the end of the name.  Where Morocco comes in I'm really not sure, and neither are any of the Japanese people in the vicinity...  It's good, but one is just not quite enough.

虫といえば、先日は阪急百貨店のウィンドーディスプレーでこの彫刻を見ました。木と石を使って、いろんな虫が作られています。とても素敵なディスプレーでした。

先日ブログで日光寺で人生初めて高知の名物の文旦を味わったと書きましたが、去年のいろんな写真を見てたらこの写真を見つけました。楽屋のお届け物でしたが、みんな「このでかいグレープフルーツはおいしいね」と言っていました。でも、今ちゃんと見てみたら、物凄く文旦ぽいですね！もしかして、初経験ではなかった・・・

I wrote last week that I had grapefruit-like fruit Buntan for the first time at the Nikkoji temple in Nara, but now I found this picture from last year.  This incredible fruit was delivered to our dressing room, and everyone was raving about how delicious the this particular giant and very sweet grapefruit was.  Now that I look at the picture, it looks suspiciously like Buntan!

誕生日の時はどうしてもちょっとホームシックになりますね。家族や友達に会いたくなります。一番好きなうちの家族の名物はこのスロベニアのお菓子。フランサテと呼びます。最高においしいですよ！！！

Especially around my birhtday I really miss home.  Thank you so much for the calls and emails everyone.  I really also miss this Slovenian dessert, called Flancate!!!  This is one you cannot send in the mail, it will arrive as dust.  I guess I just have to wait until the next time I get home...

一年前のわたしの誕生日の様子です。一年で変わりましたかな・・・

Last year's birthday.  Have I changed at all in the last year???

昨日「せやねん」という番組にちょっと出さしていただきました。上方噺家３０人と一緒に落語についてのクイズに参加させていただきました。あとで友達に「ちょっと緊張したね」といわれました。そんなことないんですよ。めちゃくちゃ緊張しました！写真は一緒に出た月亭八斗兄さん、桂米市さん、月亭天使さん、と入門してから十日間しかたっていない桂鈴々さん。

Along with 30 other young Osaka rakugo storytellers, I got to take part in the popular Saturday morning TV show "Seyanen".   It was live so I was pretty nervous, but I think everything went OK.  Pictured with me are a few of the other storytellers on the show.  The youngest, Katsura Rinrin, started only 10 days ago!   Ganbarou!

今朝弟弟子と一緒に三人で枝三郎兄さんを待っている様子です。枝三郎兄さんにお稽古を付けていただきました。今日もいっぱい教えてくださいました。古典落語の「四人癖」「動物園」など、扇子と手ぬぐいで煙管を吸っている仕草など。とても充実しました。とてもとても面白かったです。これから台詞を覚えなあかん・・・

Sanga Sango and I waited for our older brother storyteller Edasaburo this morning.  He came to teach us traditional rakugo.  It was a great session.  He taught us the traditional stories "The Zoo" and "For Men's Habits" as well as some classical rakugo movements, like how to represent the smoking of a Japanese pipe using the fan and handtowel.  Edasaburo is really a great teacher.  Now, to memorizing lines!

レストランのマスターです。とてもとてもいい人です。ご自分のレストランについていっぱい教えてくださいました。うちらの後ろの壁は実は大阪城です！

This is the owner of the restaurant En.  He is really proud of his place and told me all kinds of interesting things about the restaurant.  The wall behind us is actually part of Osaka Castle!

いきなりでしたが、一曲だけ太鼓を叩くことになりました。繁昌亭で初めて本番に叩きました。結構うまくいっていましたが、一番最後の「とんとん」のところ、笛の最後の「ぴ〜〜〜〜〜〜っ」が終わるまで待つべきなのに、ちょっと調子に乗って途中で「とんとん」叩いてしまいました。それで笛がちゃんと終わったら、もう一人、大太鼓を叩いている先輩が、本当は私も一緒に叩くだったはずだった「とんとん」を一人で叩きました。それで舞台袖にいる４−５人が同時に私に「早い！」と言ました。せっかく上手くいっていたのに！二度と同じ失敗はしません！

三河君は今日太鼓叩いていません。

Today I was called upon to drum at the Hanjotei Rakugo Theatre for the first time!  It was one song.  Everthing went really well until the final two emphatic beats of the song.  I was supposed to wait for the flute to finish its final long note, but I got so caught up in it all that I wacked the drum while the flute was still playing "Ton!  Ton!"  Then the note finished and the other drummer who I was supposed to be in time with whacked his drum at the right time, "Ton! Ton!"  At which moment three storytellers and two shamisen players all turned to me and said in perfect unison, "Early!"  How embarrassing.  I'll never make that mistake again.

My younger brother storyteller Sanga didn't get to drum today.

たま兄さんは繁昌亭の創作落語賞をとりまして、今週は昼席の中とりです。今日は三語君と二人で舞台袖でたま兄さんの落語を聞いていまして、二人とも大笑いしました。明日も楽しみにしております。

朝２時半です。寝れませんでした。誕生日もう過ぎました。一日とても充実しました。でも今年はまだ花見をしていませんので、自転車に乗って、天満橋、川のそばでお花見しています。昨日弟弟子にもらったバースデーケーキの残りを食べながら、今までの４０年のことをちょっと考えています。

ある私の人生にとても大事な先生が先日私にこうおっしゃいました。「君が日本に来てからの１１年でやってきた事は、本当に集中したら、３年以内でできた気がする。でもそれは過去だから、これから頑張りましょう。」

厳しいお言葉ですが、おっしゃる通りだと思います。今まで無駄な時間が多過ぎです。それよりお世話になった人にご迷惑をかけ過ぎです。期待されたことは結局足りなさ過ぎです。後悔していること多すぎです。

これからがんばります。４０代の一日目の充実を千里の道の一歩目にしましょう。

Happy Birthday to me!

本日皆様のお陰様でなんと、無事に４０歳になりました。誕生日は繁昌亭の昼席の楽屋番で勉強させていただきました。いろんな面白い落語を舞台袖で聴きながら、先輩がたや師匠がたの着物を畳みました、面白い諺を教えてもらいました、楽屋のいろんな面白い話しも聞きました、太鼓の練習もできました。桂とま都兄さんにも露の雅姉さんにも三語くんにも「４０歳に見えへん！」と言われました。やさしいですね。最高な誕生日でした！今日のいい諺：便りのないのは元気な証拠。とま都兄さん、勉強させていただきました！

Today I turned 40!  That means I've lived at least one third of my life, perhaps even more.  It was a great birthday.  I spent the day at the Hanjotei Rakugo Theatre, helping in the dressing room, folding performers' kimonos, listening to various interesting conversations among storytellers, listening to great stories from the wings of the stage, serving tea, getting asked questions about English and getting taught interesting Japanese proverbs.　Today's proverb was the Japanese version of "No news is good news."   Tayori no nai wa gennki na shouko.  Literally translated, "If you don't get a letter that's a sign that all is well."

All in all a birthday I will not forget!

日光寺でまた初経験！今まで食べたことのないフルーツをいただきました。高知県の名物の「分担」だそうです。丸ごとのフルーツの見た目はでかいグレープフルーツにそっくりです。中身はびっくりするほど小さいグレープフルーツに見えます。味は甘くておいしい、ま、グレープフルーツのよう・・・

For dessert at Nikkoji we had Buntan, a fruit that apparently grows abundantly in Kochi Prefecture.  On the outside it looks like a huge graperfruit.  Peel it, and on the inside it looks like a small graperfruit.  It tastes fantastic.  Like a very sweet, well, grapefruit.  It makes you wonder if the people in Kochi didn't just stick their own fancy name on the grapefruits they grow...

日光寺に来ました前さんはベリー・コンパクト・メガネを持っていたんです。感心しますよね。便利は確かですが、無くしやすくないんですかな・・・

Mr. Mae, who came to Nikkoji, had the most compact pair of eyeglasses I have ever seen.  Incredibly convient, but wouldn't this make it that much easier to misplace your glasses?

日光寺のあやねちゃんのソックスは本当におしゃれでしゃた。「Akubi Girl」靴下です。私はよくアクビ・ボーイに感じますね！！

Nikkoji Temple grand-daughter Ayane had a great pair of socks on: Akubi Girl, which means Yawn Girl.  I can relate because I often feel that I could easily be called Yawn Boy...

パフォーマンス終わったら日本に来てから今まで食べたことあるお弁当のなかで一番豪華なお弁当を頂くことになりました。麺類以外日本料理のすべてが入っていると思います。ごちそうさまでした！

Nothing I have seen in my 11 years in Japan compares to the huge bento dinner we were served after the performance at Nikkoji.  Except for noodles, a little bit of every kind of Japanese food is represented.

日光寺の出番の前の弁当は小さくてめっちゃくっちゃ美味しかったです。大変美味しく頂きました！

ずっとお世話になっております藤井寺市にある葛井寺（ふじいでら）のご住職に奈良県の日光寺までつれて行っていただきました。着いたとたんに二人のご住職は私に大事な発表してくださいました。「実は、僕らは兄弟」。似ていますか？

The head priest at the Fujidera Temple, who I have known for over two years, took me by car from Fujiidera to Nikkoji Temple to do a performance.  When the head priest of Nikkoji Temple came out to greet us, they let me in on their little secret.  They are brothers!  Do you see the family resemblance?

昨日は奈良県下市町にある日光寺で出番ありました。住職は途中で「日光」と「サンシャイン」の意味は一緒ということに気付きました。私はそれで日光寺の専門芸人となりました。凄く凄く楽しかったです。

Yesterday I performed in Nara, at the Nikkoji Temple in the town of Shimoichi.  The head priest at the temple somewhere along the way realized that the meaning of the temple's name is roughly "Sunshine".  And with that I became the Nikkoji temple's official Rakugo Storyteller.  They agreed not to invite any other storytellers to perform unless they also changed the name of the temple.

It was an unforgettable day!  Thank you so much!

ローヤル・パインズ・ホテルが作っていただいた楽屋の夕食：私の最高に好きなロブスター！カナダではよく食べますが、日本ではなかなか出てこないんですね。大変おいしくいただきました。

In the dressing room bofore the show, the dish the hotel prepared for us was none other than lobster.  In the seafood heaven that is Japan, you very very rarely see lobster on the menu.  Delicious!  Maybe that's how I got through my dance!

あと五日間四十歳になります。どう思います？

I am turning 40 in about 5 days.  Ah!  The Japanese have recently adopted a way of describing this age.  (And when I say recently, I mean recently - like since about one year ago.)  You say "Arafo".  This is short for "Araundo Fohtee" which is taken from the English "Around Forty".   If you were in your late 20s, you might say you were "Arasa", from "Araundo Sahtee" or "Around Thirty".  Learning Japanese gets easier every day. 

昨日笑一兄さんと一緒にパフォーマンスしたのはよくNGKで出ていますもりやすバンバンビガロ兄さん。お兄さんの顔の写真を撮るのが忘れましたが、楽屋で凄い手品をやっているバンバンビガロ兄さんの手をたりました...

Yesterday, the magician, juggler, balloon performer with the best name, literally, in the business, performed with us at the event.  His name is Moriyasu  Bambam Bigalo.  I forgot to take a picture of with his face in it, but I did get a shot of his hands doing some cool magic in the dressing room before the show.

昨日のイベントで一緒に出演したのは横浜から来ましたバルーン天才松下笑一兄さん。もと漫才師でバルーンパフォーマンセをやり始まったらバルーンアートの本当にマニアックになりました。笑一兄さんが作るようなバルーンアート本当に見たことはないです。もちろん大人にも子供にも大人気です！

Yesterday, one of my fellow performers was balloon-art genius Matsushita Shoichi.  You have really never seen anything like his balloon creations.  He came all the way from Yokohama to perform with us.  Kids, especially, go crazy over his performance and his balloon creations.  Nice to see you again Shoichi!

昨日は守口にあるローヤル・パインズ・ホテルで宮川花子ファミリーのパフォーマンスありました。アコーディオン漫談で勉強させていただきました。でもそれより、昨日は何と、私のダンスデビューでした！「あなたはどち」という曲、花子師匠は早口でお金持ちと貧乏人の人生について歌っています。踊っているのは貧乏役の宮川さゆみとダンスの森川先生。お金持ちの役はMioさんとわたくしでした！めっちゃ楽しかったです。やらしいやろう。

Yesterday the day finally came - my dance debut!  As Hanako Shisho sang in rapid-fire patter about the virtues and vices of the lives of the rich and poor, four of us danced.   As poor folk the wonderful Miyagawa Sayumi and professional dancer Morikawa-Sensei.  As rich folk the lovely Mio-San and yours truly.  I didn't break a leg so I guess it went alright.

昨日三語君は上方落語協会に司式に入りました。繫昌亭で協会の総会でみんなの前で挨拶しました。写真は繁昌亭の前で三河くんと一緒に。おめでとう、三語君！

Today, my little brother storyteller Katsura Sango was officially inducted into the Kamigata Rakugo Association.  It's official!  Now there's no escape!
