昨日のロケ殺生でした。本当に寒かった。リーと二人で苦しんでいる姿を番組で見て下さい！

あれから２４時間もたって、今ストーブの前に座っていますが、まだまだ寒く感じております。

Yesterday Lee and I went to a temple for a serious religious experience for our TV show.  I can't tell you what we did before it goes on air, but I will say that it was very very very very cold. 

There are two producers and one director on this show.  I am beginning to dislike them very intensely.

One more day of shooting on the 19th and we're finished episode one.  If all goes well, maybe they will ask us back for episode two!!!  After what Lee and I went through yesterday, there better be an episode. 2!

On second thought, I may regret hoping for that...

昨日難波に行ったら、鶏に会いました。

都会で自由に散歩している鶏に出くわすのが人生初めて。

Yesterday, probably for the first time in my life,

I saw two chickens strolling freely on a city sidewalk.

皆様お待たせいたしました！翻訳の仕事はやっとましになりました！

終わっていないんですが、大きいな山を越えました！！！

この一ヶ月睡眠は少ないし、運動はしていないし、吉本のスタッフにいっぱいごちそうになって美味しいものを食べましたので、なんと、かなり太りました。

只今92キロからやせよとします！

Long time no write!

The mountain or translation has finally been traversed!

But I've spent a month in front of a computer and I've gotten fat!  Help!

Sorry for not writing for so long! 

修業は忙しい時にランチはパッとファストフードを食べることになります。でも、このロッテリアのダブルチーズバーガーのチーズがなかなかとれないんですので、ファストフードと申し上げても食べきるまではかなり時間かかります。

Sanga is particularly enjoying this Lotteria Double Cheeseburger.  Fast food maybe, but it took him a long time to finish it.

サンシャインクリーニングも見つけて、輝（TERU）という麺屋もあるみたいですね。麺屋もサンシャイン割引でますかな・・・

I found a noodle restaurant with the same Japanese character for "Shine" that appears in my name, Sunshine.  Along with the Sunshine cleaners, I wonder if I can apply for a discount...?

  この間ちょっと出さしていただきました番組は「うんちくクン」という番組でした。今日三河君からいただきました駄菓子が「うんちくん」というキャラのキャンディー。その微妙な違いがまだ私に難しい・・・

I was on a TV show last week called Unchikukun.  The character represented on the candy I'm about to eat is named Unchikun.  I'll let you know about the subtle differences between the two once someone explains it to me...

三段兄さんのハワイのお土産です！最近私はもらいっぱなし。皆様なんと感謝申し上げたらよいやら言葉はございません。

今朝弟弟子と一緒に三人で枝三郎兄さんを待っている様子です。枝三郎兄さんにお稽古を付けていただきました。今日もいっぱい教えてくださいました。古典落語の「四人癖」「動物園」など、扇子と手ぬぐいで煙管を吸っている仕草など。とても充実しました。とてもとても面白かったです。これから台詞を覚えなあかん・・・

Sanga Sango and I waited for our older brother storyteller Edasaburo this morning.  He came to teach us traditional rakugo.  It was a great session.  He taught us the traditional stories "The Zoo" and "For Men's Habits" as well as some classical rakugo movements, like how to represent the smoking of a Japanese pipe using the fan and handtowel.  Edasaburo is really a great teacher.  Now, to memorizing lines!

いきなりでしたが、一曲だけ太鼓を叩くことになりました。繁昌亭で初めて本番に叩きました。結構うまくいっていましたが、一番最後の「とんとん」のところ、笛の最後の「ぴ〜〜〜〜〜〜っ」が終わるまで待つべきなのに、ちょっと調子に乗って途中で「とんとん」叩いてしまいました。それで笛がちゃんと終わったら、もう一人、大太鼓を叩いている先輩が、本当は私も一緒に叩くだったはずだった「とんとん」を一人で叩きました。それで舞台袖にいる４−５人が同時に私に「早い！」と言ました。せっかく上手くいっていたのに！二度と同じ失敗はしません！

三河君は今日太鼓叩いていません。

Today I was called upon to drum at the Hanjotei Rakugo Theatre for the first time!  It was one song.  Everthing went really well until the final two emphatic beats of the song.  I was supposed to wait for the flute to finish its final long note, but I got so caught up in it all that I wacked the drum while the flute was still playing "Ton!  Ton!"  Then the note finished and the other drummer who I was supposed to be in time with whacked his drum at the right time, "Ton! Ton!"  At which moment three storytellers and two shamisen players all turned to me and said in perfect unison, "Early!"  How embarrassing.  I'll never make that mistake again.

My younger brother storyteller Sanga didn't get to drum today.

たま兄さんは繁昌亭の創作落語賞をとりまして、今週は昼席の中とりです。今日は三語君と二人で舞台袖でたま兄さんの落語を聞いていまして、二人とも大笑いしました。明日も楽しみにしております。

Happy Birthday to me!

本日皆様のお陰様でなんと、無事に４０歳になりました。誕生日は繁昌亭の昼席の楽屋番で勉強させていただきました。いろんな面白い落語を舞台袖で聴きながら、先輩がたや師匠がたの着物を畳みました、面白い諺を教えてもらいました、楽屋のいろんな面白い話しも聞きました、太鼓の練習もできました。桂とま都兄さんにも露の雅姉さんにも三語くんにも「４０歳に見えへん！」と言われました。やさしいですね。最高な誕生日でした！今日のいい諺：便りのないのは元気な証拠。とま都兄さん、勉強させていただきました！

Today I turned 40!  That means I've lived at least one third of my life, perhaps even more.  It was a great birthday.  I spent the day at the Hanjotei Rakugo Theatre, helping in the dressing room, folding performers' kimonos, listening to various interesting conversations among storytellers, listening to great stories from the wings of the stage, serving tea, getting asked questions about English and getting taught interesting Japanese proverbs.　Today's proverb was the Japanese version of "No news is good news."   Tayori no nai wa gennki na shouko.  Literally translated, "If you don't get a letter that's a sign that all is well."

All in all a birthday I will not forget!

あと五日間四十歳になります。どう思います？

I am turning 40 in about 5 days.  Ah!  The Japanese have recently adopted a way of describing this age.  (And when I say recently, I mean recently - like since about one year ago.)  You say "Arafo".  This is short for "Araundo Fohtee" which is taken from the English "Around Forty".   If you were in your late 20s, you might say you were "Arasa", from "Araundo Sahtee" or "Around Thirty".  Learning Japanese gets easier every day. 

昨日三語君は上方落語協会に司式に入りました。繫昌亭で協会の総会でみんなの前で挨拶しました。写真は繁昌亭の前で三河くんと一緒に。おめでとう、三語君！

Today, my little brother storyteller Katsura Sango was officially inducted into the Kamigata Rakugo Association.  It's official!  Now there's no escape!

昨日宮川大助師匠とお娘さんの宮川さゆみ姉さんが子供のミュージカル出ていらしゃいました。子供は六か月頑張ってこのミュージカルを作ったそうです。子どもたちは信じられないほど踊り上手でした。感動しました。

大助師匠の約は子供のハンス・クリスチャン・アンデルセンデンマークの童話作家でした（１８０５年ー１８７５年）。ミュージカルの最初んぼ場面でアンデルセンの彫像がいきなり動いて来るんです。師匠は素晴らしかったです、とても感動しました。このメークはをつけるのは３０かかったそうです。さゆみ姉さんも凄く面白かったです。掃除のおばちゃんで、アンデルセンの彫像を見たら「あんたは私の死んだお父ちゃんにそっくり！」と言いました。その台詞はさすがにとてもうけました。

I went to see Daisuke Shisho and his daughter Sayumi San in a Children's play based on stories from Hans Christian Anderson.  The cast apparently worked on the show for six months.  The children's dancing was really incredible.

Daisuke Shisho played a statue of Anderson who comes to life and befriends a little girl.  He was truly fantastic in the role - his performance was very moving.  Sayumi san was hilarious as a cleaning lady who at one point as she is dusting off the statue says, "You look just like my dead father!".  That line got a huge reaction.

Great work everyone!

やっぱり有名人になると名前がいろんなところで使われることになりますね。仕方がない。ここクリーニングだしたら割引をいただけるんですかな・・・

This dry cleaner has great taste in names.  They called themselves "Sunshine Cleaners".   I wonder if they would give me a discount on my cleaning...

昨日お相撲の帰りでなんば駅の近く魔法少女なのはに会いました。マジックを見せて頂きませんでしたが、御挨拶だけできてとても嬉しかったです。

Yesterday on my way home from Sumo I ran into none other that Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha.  She didn't show me any magic, but it was a pleasure to meet her anyway.

今朝10時から踊りの稽古に行きました。今度舞台で花子師匠と一緒に踊ることになります。私は踊るのが全然だめです。英語の表現あります「I have two left feet」。とにかく、右手とかは強い、左手は弱いというイメージで、「私は左足が２本あります」＝「私は踊るのが下手です」。

でもとてもいい先生ととてもいいパートナーいると、自分も少し上手になりますね。写真にいる男は踊りの先生の森川先生です。とても男前ですよ！しかもめちゃやさしいです。私みたいな生徒いっても全くイライラしていません、ゆっくり教えていただいています。

女性のかたはMioさんです。今度の舞台で私のパートナーになります。踊りは最高に上手です。あととても美人で、ドキドキしまして、自分の踊りに集中するのは難しかったです。でもとてもとても楽しみにしています！

がんばります！

Today I went into the dance studio at 10 am for a dance lesson.  I will be dancing in a Japanese comic variety show at the end of the month with one of Japan's most famous comedians, Ms. Hanako Miyagawa.   Hanako shisho has been teaching me alot about comedy and she and her husband and comic partner Daisuke shisho (shisho means master) have also given me many opportunities to perform.

But I didn't think I would ever be drafted as a dancer!  I have two left feet!

Luckily, I have a great teacher in Mr. Morikawa sensei (the very handsome lad in the picture).  He is a very patient teacher and didn't get upset with me even once throughout the entire one hour lesson!

Beside Morikawa sensei is my partner in the upcoming performance, Mio san.  She is a great dancer, and stunning - it's difficult to concentrate on dancing!

I am really looking forward to the performance!  Perhaps a new career path... 

 昨日日本対カナダのアイス・ホッケーの試合見ました。凄かったですね。日本は凄かったですね。２−１カナダにアイスーホッケーで勝つは相当凄いです。日本の選手が泣いていました。おめでとうございます！

Yesterday I watched the hightlights of the day's paralympics in Canada.  Japan beat Canada in hockey, 2-1.  It looked like a phenomenal game.  I wish I could have seen the whole game from start to finish.  Some of the Japanese players were crying they were so happy,.  Great work!

これは弟弟子の桂三語君です。勉強熱心ですよ。一緒にランチを食べに行っても、レストランのメニュースタンドに台本を入れて、食べながら勉強しています。偉い！

ちなみに二人で事務所に戻った時に三語君が「台本レストランに忘れた！」と言ました。「取りに行きましょうか？」と聞いたら、「いやっ、大丈夫、ねたも全部覚えていますから。」

This is my little brother storyteller Katsura Sango.  He is very passionate about learning new rakugo stories.,  He is so into studying that when we went to lunch yesterday he put his script into the menu stand at the restaurant and read while he was eating.

When we got back to the office, Sango suddenly said, "Ah, I forgot my script at the restaurant!"  When I asked, "Shall we go back and get it?", he answered, "No, it's OK.  I don't need it.  I've already memorized the story."

  I went to a Japanese taiko drum store called Taiko Masa to get some Japanese drum sticks.  It's part of the rakugo training to learn to play the drums for the music that introduces each storyteller.  I figure if I practice on cushions in my apartment at home it won't be too noisy.  Peaking into the picture is Sanga.

今日太鼓正という太鼓専門店に太鼓のばちを買いに行きました。家で太鼓の練習をするためです。太鼓を叩いたら音が五月蠅いんですが、座布団を叩いたら十分練習になります。ばちの写真に邪魔しに来たのは三河君です。

三河君の携帯がボロボロになってしゃまって、新しい機能を買いました。この新しいやつの一番凄いところはカメラの「スマイル・メーター」。写真を撮ると画面に相手のスマイルパーセントが出てきます。三河君も私の８５％はまだ越えたことがありませんので、毎朝スマイル運動しています！

Sanga's cel had seen better days so he got a new one.  The new phone has a really cool function: the smile meter.  When you put it in camera mode, the smile meter displays the smile percentage of the subject.  Sanga and I have yet to produce a smile over 85%, so we are doing smile calisthenics every morning now.
